Moving a steel plate or an aluminium panel by hand is slow, and it is the most common cause of back and crushed-finger injuries in metal fabrication. Three methods dominate on site: slings and chains, lifting magnets, and vacuum lifters. Each has a place, but they are not interchangeable.
Slings and chains
Slings are cheap and work on almost any shape, but they grip the edge or wrap the panel. On thin sheet that means creases, kinks, and marked edges, and it usually takes two to four people to keep a large panel under control. Slings also leave the face of the panel exposed to knocks as it swings.
Lifting magnets
A magnet is fast on flat ferrous steel, but it has two hard limits. It does nothing on aluminium, stainless, or any non-ferrous panel, and its holding force drops on coated, painted, or galvanised stock and on thin gauge. A magnet can also double-pick from a stack, lifting two sheets at once.
Vacuum lifters
A vacuum lifter grips the panel across its face with suction pads and spreads the load, so one operator can lift, tilt, and place the panel from a wireless remote. Because the grip is suction, not magnetism, it works across steel, aluminium, stainless, and coated panels alike.
