Glass Weight Calculator
Enter your panel dimensions and glass thickness. Get the weight in pounds and kilograms instantly, plus weight per square foot and square metre. Works for annealed, tempered, low-iron, laminated, and wired glass.
Densities are nominal. Real glass varies by manufacturer (±1–2%). For laminated glass the interlayer thickness affects the result.

The Glass Weight Formula
Glass weight equals area times thickness times density. The density of float glass (annealed and tempered) is 2,500 kg/m³, which is 156 lb/ft³ or roughly 2.5 g/cm³. From that:
Metric:
weight (kg) = length (m) × width (m) × thickness (mm) × 2.5
Imperial:
weight (lb) ≈ length (in) × width (in) × thickness (in) × 0.0903
Or, per unit area: a 6 mm pane weighs about 15 kg/m² (about 3.07 lb/ft²). A 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) pane weighs about 3.27 lb/ft² (16.0 kg/m²).

Densities are nominal values used by most calculators and engineering tables. Real glass varies slightly by manufacturer and composition.
| Glass type | kg/m³ | lb/ft³ | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annealed (float) | 2,500 | 156 | The default for standard window and storefront glass. |
| Tempered | 2,500 | 156 | Same density as annealed; tempering changes stress, not mass. |
| Low-iron | 2,510 | 156.7 | Marketed as Optiwhite / Starphire / Pilkington Optiwhite. |
| Laminated | 2,480 | 154.8 | Effective density of glass + PVB interlayer. SGP is slightly heavier. |
| Wired | 2,570 | 160.4 | Embedded steel mesh adds about 3%. |

Lift it safely
Lifting heavy glass safely
Once a glass panel is over ~80 lb (35 kg), hand carrying is slow and the biggest cause of back and crushed-finger injuries on glazing jobs. Quattrolifts vacuum lifters grip the panel face with suction pads so one operator can move and place panels up to 1,800 lb (820 kg).
